A Saturday of Brazilian Culture and More…

Experience Brazilian culture on Saturday, February 9th. Alterra Coffee
Roasters and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Programming will
be hosting a series of activities and entertainment.

CARNAVAL DO CAFÉ
TIME: Beginning at 1pm
LOCATION: Alterra Coffee Roasters (2211 N. Prospect Avenue)

Special Brazilian foods made by the Alterra Baking Company will be served.
Carnaval do Café will feature students from UWM (choreographed by Assistant
Professor and Brazilian native Simone Ferro of the dance program) who will
perform the frevo, a traditional dance from Pernambuco state in
northeastern Brazil that symbolizes happiness and the spirit of Carnival.
Following them will be members of the Brazilian community in Milwaukee, who
will wow us with their fancy samba steps.

In addition, Alterra will host a local group that practices capoeira, a
form of martial arts unique to Brazil. Capoeira resembles an acrobatic
dance set to music (both voice and instrumental), but it also represents
the experience of African slaves in Brazil. Capoeira Angola Corpo e
Movimento of Milwaukee will give a demonstration of Angola, one of the two
main types of this art form.

BRAZILIAN CARNAVAL
TIME: 7:00-11:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm with music starting at 7pm)
LOCATION: UWM Union Terrace (2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., at the corner of
Kenwood and Maryland on the East Side).


This event is part of the UWM Union International Week program. The party
is free to the public. All guests are invited to dress up in costumes
(think Halloween in February!) and compete for prizes.
